LIT
Picture it. 1993. Toronto. A gay boy moves to the big city with only a dream and his obscenely short shorts! All alone in a new city, the boy spent most nights out on-the-town drinking, whoring and dancing! When the “Discotheques” closed he would head home through the village, to a tiny shared apartment. It was on those late hour walks-of-shame that this young man saw the true MAGIC of the city! The nightlife was exhilarating and unlike anything in his small-minded small-town! The buzzing of the neon and the hum of the streetlights were like music and he would prance home to the soundtrack of the city that didn’t sleep. It was love! That boy, was me, and this installation of glow-in-the-dark paintings is a tribute to the excitement of my city at night!
It’s ‘lit’!!
This show is a reinterpretation of paintings from my "Sign Language Series" (which integrate iconic movie quotes onto vintage signage). But as a BONUS, these pieces have also been painted with specialty paint to GLOW under black lights! So there are really 2 ways to view these paintings - one look during the daylight, and one look at night! I LOVE these:
